How do I know if I need a referral for my office appointment?

Many insurance plans, especially HMO's, require a referral or written authorization from your PCP (primary care physician) for each visit. Your PCP should be able to tell you if you need a referral but ultimately it is your responsibility to know if a referral or written authorization is required before each visit and to obtain one. For further questions or concerns regarding your referral, log in to Patient Portal and email our Authorization Department, or call our office at (305) 913-0666.

I have seen my doctor at GI Care Center in the past, so why is an office visit needed with the doctor before I can schedule my procedure?

It is important for your doctor to update your medical history and assess you prior to scheduling a procedure in order to ensure your safety. Also, many insurance companies require a current documented office visit prior to authorizing a procedure.

What is a consultation?

A consult is another term for an office appointment. If you are scheduled for a consult, you WILL NOT be having a procedure that day. You will be meeting with a physician to review your symptoms and history in order to determine the next appropriate step in your care.

How soon should I cancel my appointment if I can't make it?

If you must cancel your appointment, please do so at least 48 hours in advance.

Do I need to bring anything with me for my office appointment?

Yes. Bring your insurance card, a referral if required from your primary care physician, and additional test results or pertinent medical records. We also suggest you fill out our HIPAA and medical history forms ahead of time in order to expedite your office visit. View and print the forms in pdf format.
